Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance)
Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, is coverage offered by private insurance companies to help pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare. This includes copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that you would otherwise be responsible for paying.
Medigap plans are standardized and must provide a core set of benefits, though some plans offer additional coverage. For example, certain Medigap plans may help cover emergency medical care if you become ill while traveling outside the United States.
Am I Eligible for a Medigap Plan?
To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must:
- Be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.
- Pay a monthly premium for your Medigap plan (in addition to your Part B premium).
Medigap policies cover one person, so if you're married, both spouses will need to purchase separate policies. If you're currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C), you are not eligible for a Medigap policy unless you switch back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
